Advanced Energy Revises First Quarter Outlook

Fort Collins, Colorado (March 1, 2001)—Advanced Energy (Nasdaq: AEIS) today announced revisions to its business outlook for the first quarter of 2001. Advanced Energy is an industry-leading provider of critical technology solutions for the manufacture of semiconductors, data storage products, and flat panel displays.

Doug Schatz, Advanced Energy's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, said, "We have experienced increased volatility in the weeks following our recent financial results press release that included our business outlook for the first half of 2001. We have seen greater weakness in order patterns, including substantial cancellations and push-outs from our major OEM customers. As a result, we have revised our outlook for the current quarter, down 12 percent from our previous expectations. We now anticipate revenues in the $73 million to $76 million range, compared to prior expectations of revenues between $83 million and $86 million."

The company has implemented additional cost controls including a hiring freeze, additional salary reductions, one week shutdowns in the first quarter and second quarter, as well as further restrictions on travel and discretionary spending. The company anticipates first quarter gross margins in the low to mid 40 percent range, due to the reduced revenue expectations.

"Despite the uncertainty and limited visibility for 2001, we believe the semiconductor industry is supported by compelling growth drivers in 2002 based on the transitions underway to 300mm, copper, and low-k dielectrics. We are committed to maximizing shareholder value by continuing to invest in programs that ensure Advanced Energy's long-term growth. As we have done in prior downturns, we will prioritize engineering and technology development in order to maintain our track record of market share gains and technology leadership," said Mr. Schatz.
