One Of Advanced Energy’s Senior Scientist Receives Mentor Award From SVC

Dr. William D. Sproul recognized for his significant contributions and work in vacuum coatings technology

FORT COLLINS, Colo., June 17, 2003—Advanced Energy Industries Inc. (Nasdaq: AEIS) today announced that one of its senior scientists, William D. Sproul, Ph.D., has received a Mentor Award from the Society of Vacuum Coaters (SVC) for his contributions to high-rate, reactive, unbalanced magnetron sputtering of hard and superhard coatings technologies. Dr. Sproul was honored along with two other 2003 award recipients, Roger Phillips (Flex Products, Inc.) and Peter Martin (Battelle Pacific Northwest Laboratory), at a ceremony during the recent SVC conference in San Francisco.

During the ceremony, the SVC also honored 25 other technologists, some posthumously, who have made outstanding contributions to the development of vacuum coating technology or for their special contributions to the Society.

As one of the first recipients of the SVC Mentor Award, Dr. Sproul stated, “I am very honored to be named one of the 2003 Mentor Award winners, and equally as thrilled to be included among the 25 other inaugural winners, including John Thornton, with whom I had the privilege of working with over 16 years ago.” Sproul added, “The Society’s recognition of significant contributors to vacuum technology will go a long way in advancing our science with future generations of engineers.”

According to SVC awards committee chair David Glocker, “The SVC established the Mentor Award program to recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions to vacuum coating technology and to the SVC. This year, we were pleased to recognize Bill Sproul, Roger Phillips and Peter Martin for their work and significant contributions.” Glocker added, “In Bill’s case, the SVC wanted to acknowledge his strong commitment and consistent outstanding contributions in the field of magnetron sputtering and, more specifically, reactive sputtering. This award is a way for the SVC to express its gratitude and honor those who have helped build vacuum technology.”

Sproul joined Advanced Energy in 2002 as a senior scientist, specializing in emerging process power technology for reactive sputtering applications. Prior to joining AE, Sproul served as co-founder and president of Reactive Sputtering, Inc. He also served as general manager for magnetic products at Sputtered Films, Inc.; manager of the vapor deposition coatings group at the Basic Industrial Research Laboratory at Northwestern University; senior research engineer at Borg-Warner Corp.; and research engineer at American Can Corp.

Sproul earned his bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degrees in materials science engineering from Brown University in Providence, R.I. His industry affiliations include the American Vacuum Society (AVS)—having served as president and other board-level positions—and the SVC. He also has held numerous chairman positions for AVS’s International Conference on Metallurgical Coatings. In addition, he is a past executive committee member, secretary and chair of the AVS Vacuum Metallurgy Division (VMD), known today as the Advanced Surface Engineering Division. Sproul also is an AVS Distinguished Lecturer. Throughout his career, he has presented more than 155 technical presentations, authored or co-authored 118 technical papers; and has authored 10 U.S. patents in the field of hard coatings.
